Overcoming Anxiety With the Gospel

Each week at Agape Moms, come hear a story of how the gospel is transforming our lives! Laura DiLeonardi kicked off the semester by sharing about how God is helping her overcome her struggle with control and anxiety.

“One of the ways I often forget the gospel is by striving in my own strength, which leads to anxiety. At the root of our anxiety is a trust in ourselves instead of God….

Romans 8:28 says that God promises to work everything out for the good of those who love him and have been called according to his purpose. Psalm 139 tells us how God makes us and that we cannot add or take away one day from our book of life which Christ has already written for us. These truths melt anxiety away from the inside out as we release our grip and surrender everything to our Maker.

The deeper God’s truths penetrate my heart, the more I see gospel-fruit in my life. While I still struggle, I find victory when I repent of my self-reliance and continually shift my trust to Christ alone.

Anxiety is a common mom struggle, and we want you to “bring your mess” to Agape Moms, but we promise not to leave you in it or let it define who you are. We won’t justify anxiety as “just another mom-struggle” or just a mental health issue, while there is a place for medical help here, anxiety is also a spiritual issue and the ultimate remedy is in Christ."

8 Years of God's Faithfulness to Agape Moms

This Fall we celebrate the eighth anniversary of Agape Moms Tampa Bay. It has been eight years since the very first meeting of the original Agape moms group in Lithia, Florida. It has been amazing to watch God grow this group in our community and across the country. I am very blessed to have been part of this wonderful community from the beginning and I am so grateful for this wonderful, Christ centered group! Over the past 8 years God has blessed us with the opportunity to minister to hundreds of moms and lead dozens of small groups through Gospel centered studies. While we have navigated many times of uncertainty, God has always made a way for us to continue on through big changes and seasons.

Agape Moms Leader Retreat

This weekend was simply amazing! 21 incredible women of God gathered together for our first annual leadership day retreat! Laura DiLeonardi had the joy of leading two nearly identical retreats for our TJC Women Min Team on Friday and then on Saturday, for our Agape Moms Tiny Tribe leaders and Mentor Moms. The theme was Look In- Look Out- Look Up, based off Psalm 139, specifically focusing on verses 23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”‭‭

Agape Moms Middle TN Celebrates 2 Years!

We celebrated all God has done since Agape Moms Middle Tennessee launched 2 years ago with our 2nd annual Thrift Prom! In April 2022, we began as one group of 15 mamas in a classroom of The Journey Church in Lebanon, TN. Two years later, the Lord has grown our ministry to 8 Tiny Tribes meeting in Lebanon, Carthage and Watertown. Over 150 moms this semester alone gathered weekly for biblical community. This was only possible because dozens of moms said yes to giving their lives to making disciples as Tiny Tribe leaders and being on servant leader teams to help us setup, welcome, live on mission at our monthly park gatherings, clothing swaps, supporting our foster ministry, and so much more. Everyone’s gifts are needed and valued!

Mission Minded Women's Conference

The Mission-Minded Women Conference was incredible! It’s hard to put into words what it’s like to pray and worship alongside so many unique women who are giving their lives for the sake of the gospel in very specific ways- in international pro-life centers, human trafficking, adoption, cross cultural evangelism and so many more ways. It was a joy to make new friends and I look forward to the collaboration for the sake of the gospel going forward!

I had the honor of sharing about how God led me to start Agape Moms in the “dare to dream” portion of Friday night along with two workshops on Saturday.

Immanuel

God could have chosen to call Jesus anything, but there's something so personal about Immanuel meaning “God with us.” God is in every way “other” than us, and yet He chose to rescue us in the most intimate way. He is God with us, but often people believe the lie that He doesn’t care about our pain when he actually showed up to fix it.

He's the God who willingly entered into our messy world, His arrival announced by the sound of newborn cries echoing inside a smelly barn.

He's the God who was present in our pain, and fixed it with the touch of His hands and the spit of His mouth.

He's the God who saw into the souls of the people society cast aside and said, “you belong to me.”

He's the God who came to quietly serve and love, not loudly assert His God-status authority upon arrival.

He’s the God who dwelled among us until it was His appointed time to die for us. I don't think any human writer ever would have thought this kind of story up.

We are in the season of Advent, of waiting for Christmas,

Welcoming Others is Gospel Fruit

Have you ever walked into a gathering and been on the outside of a clique? I think we all have. As someone who has moved around the country a few times, I know what it feels like to leave behind my people, position and place and be the new person in town. I’ve observed welcoming people and cliquey people play out uniquely in a few different cultures, but the bottom line is that both are gospel issues. The way we welcome others is a mirror to show us how deeply the gospel has taken root in our hearts.

Our Calling: The Target of Attack

I was sitting across the table with a dear friend this week who is a couple decades older than me, but who still struggles with questioning her greatest gifts from God. As we sipped our coffee, we both shared lies we are tempted to believe about ourselves or God, and we noticed that they are often targeted right at the best parts about who we are and what God has called us to do. The lies seemed so obvious to us as the listening friend, but they weren’t for us experiencing them, and I have a feeling you can relate to both sides of us at that coffee table. Spoiler alert- unfortunately age is not a magic fix to overcoming our deepest insecurities.

Stewarding Our Influence

As women, we lead others everyday whether we have a job title or not. As mothers we impact our children, as friends we influence daily choices, and as disciples we represent Christ, not just at church but in every place we go- baseball games, playdates and dinner tables. Leadership is all about stewarding our influence for the glory of God, but not in the way the world celebrates, mainly through appearance, but rather in our unseen dependence on God.

In The Potter's Hand

However you are heading into this fall semester, don’t forget that you are in the Potter's hands. He will be using every mishap to shape us “as he sees fit.” Every single movement at the Potter’s wheel has intention. The pressure, squeezing, and smoothing of bumps are all part of our sanctification, or becoming more like Jesus as new creations in Christ. No problem or failure surprises Him, we just need to trust the Potter’s artful process.

We can also rest in the fact that he holds us in his hands. We are not in control, so we need to take the pressure off ourselves. As we focus on God’s character and sovereignty, our anxiety will fade into his hands. He is the potter and we are the clay.  We don’t get to decide what sort of vessel he is shaping us into, for what purpose, or how others perceive the messy process, but

Overcoming People Pleasing

How much time do you think our social media generation spends on the pursuit of the approval of man over God? I think we may collectively have a problem. Paul sets up a clear contrast in Galatians 1- the approval of man is in opposition to serving God. It isn’t a blurry line, it isn’t both/and, but rather either/or. You can’t have both, but that’s a hard truth to swallow as a people pleaser like myself.

Unless the Lord Builds the House

As my children grow, the illusion of my perceived control as a mom fades. I could feel it yesterday at the park as I snapped this pic. When they were tinies, it was easy to feel like I could protect and even curate the most lovely Christ-centered family and experiences. This continued through a wonderful season of homeschooling. I could manage their sin with a time out or reward good behavior with an m+m, and it was all in plain sight, or so I liked to believe.

I’m in a new season with school age kids who no longer remain with me 24/7. I have released them from the nest, while not fully yet, and I think we’re both learning to fly. Dropping off and picking up from school each day is helping me learn to parent from a place of faith and trust in Christ instead of myself.

Living on Mission in Everyday, Messy, Mom-Life

God is calling you to live on mission for Jesus in your everyday messy mom-life. 👩‍👧‍👦🤪👶🏼😴 I remember learning back in Bible college that the original Greek word for “go” in this well known passage is in a tense that actually means “as you are going.” 💃🏻 This realization changes everything. This command goes from being only for special occasions like mission trips to being for everyday moms like you and me.
